1. For those of us who live in Northeastern America, the brightly colored, fall leaves are a glorious sight. What three factors give the leaves their many fall colors?
Chlorophyll, Carotenoids, anthocyanins.
2. One way to sort trees is to identify them as deciduous or evergreen.
Explain the difference.
deciduous refers to a tree shrub or other plant that completely loses its foliage for part of the year.
evergreen refers to a tree shrub or other plant having foliage that persists throughout the year.
Some people think that weather changes in the fall cause the deciduous trees to lose their leaves.
This is incorrect. What does cause deciduous trees to lose their leaves each fall?
Any plant tissue unable to live through the winter must be sealed off and shed to ensure the tree's survival.
Weather is a factor in the coloration of the leaves in fall.
List three weather factors that contribute to the color of the leaves.
Stormy weather, heavy wind, and heavy rain.
3. The Hickory is a very useful tree. Use the Nature Walk web activity.
List 3 different ways people use them.
Eat the nuts off of them, hickory wood to build things, baseball bats were made of hickory before ash.

How did the Colonists cook pumpkin pie?
Colonists sliced off pumpkin tops; removed seeds and filled the insides with milk, spices and honey. This was baked in hot ashes and is the origin of pumpkin pie

Six of those plants are in Ohio. The vast majority of the compact fluorescent light bulbs that are replacing incandescent are manufactured in China.
